The paper refers to existing standards in Cloud Computing, in particular, recently published NIST Cloud Computing Reference Architecture (CCRA).

The proposed ICAF defines four complementary components addressing Intercloud integration and interoperability: multi-layer Cloud Services Model that combines commonly adopted cloud service models, such as IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, in one multilayer model with corresponding interlayer interfaces; Intercloud Control and Management Plane that supports cloud based applications interaction; Intercloud Federation Framework, and Intercloud Operation Framework.

The paper briefly describes the architectural framework for cloud based infrastructure services provisioned on-demand that is used as a basis for building multilayer cloud services integration framework that allows optimized provisioning of both computing, storage and networking resources. The paper also provides suggestions for consistent inter-cloud security infrastructure. The proposed architecture is intended to provide an architectural model for developing Intercloud middleware and in this way will facilitate clouds interoperability and integration.

Cloud based applications operate as regular applications, in particular, using standard Internet protocols and platforms for services and applications interaction and management. However their composition and integration into distributed heterogeneous multi-provider cloud based infrastructure will require a number of functionalities and services that are jointly defined in this paper as Intercloud Architecture Framework.

This paper presents on-going research at the University of Amsterdam to develop the Intercloud Architecture that addresses problems with multi-domain heterogeneous cloud based applications integration and inter-provider and interplatform interoperability. The proposed high level architecture is based on the development and implementation of its different components in a few cooperating projects such as GEYSERS, GEANT, MANTICHORE and NOVI, which experience demonstrated needs for more general approach to complex multi-provider cloud based infrastructure services.

The proposed Intercloud Architecture Framework includes the four inter-related components that address different issues in heterogeneous multi-provider, multi-cloud, multi-platforms integration: multi-layer Cloud Services Model that combines commonly adopted cloud service models, such as IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, in one multilayer model with corresponding inter-layer interfaces;

Intercloud Control and Management Plane that supports cloud based applications and infrastructure services interaction;

Intercloud Federation Framework that defines infrastructure components for independent cloud domains federation;

and Intercloud Operation Framework that defines functional components and procedures to support cloud based services provisioning and operation.

The proposed approach and definitions are intended to provide a consolidation basis for numerous standardisation activities in the area of inter-cloud architectures by splitting concerns and using already existing and widely accepted solution where possible.

The analysis of the security issues in provisioning complex heterogeneous multi-provider intercloud infrastructures presented in the paper will also provide a good basis for the further intercloud security infrastructure definition and development.

Amazon’s EC2 service and Google’s Google App Engine are examples of cloud computing, which Gartner defines as a type of computing in which “massively scalable IT-enabled capabilities are delivered ‘as a service’ to external customers using Internet technologies.” Customers must demand transparency, avoiding vendors that refuse to provide detailed information on security programs.

Ask questions related to the qualifications of policy makers, architects, coders and operators; risk-control processes and technical mechanisms; and the level of testing that’s been done to verify that service and control processes are functioning as intended, and that vendors can identify unanticipated vulnerabilities. Here are seven of the specific security issues Gartner says customers should raise with vendors before selecting a cloud vendor.

1. Privileged user access. Sensitive data processed outside the enterprise brings with it an inherent level of risk, because outsourced services bypass the “physical, logical and personnel controls” IT shops exert over in-house programs. Get as much information as you can about the people who manage your data. “Ask providers to supply specific information on the hiring and oversight of privileged administrators, and the controls over their access,” Gartner says.

2. Regulatory compliance. Customers are ultimately responsible for the security and integrity of their own data, even when it is held by a service provider. Traditional service providers are subjected to external audits and security certifications. Cloud computing providers who refuse to undergo this scrutiny are “signaling that customers can only use them for the most trivial functions,” according to Gartner.

3. Data location. When you use the cloud, you probably won’t know exactly where your data is hosted. In fact, you might not even know what country it will be stored in. Ask providers if they will commit to storing and processing data in specific jurisdictions, and whether they will make a contractual commitment to obey local privacy requirements on behalf of their customers, Gartner advises.

4. Data segregation. Data in the cloud is typically in a shared environment alongside data from other customers. Encryption is effective but isn’t a cure-all. “Find out what is done to segregate data at rest,” Gartner advises. The cloud provider should provide evidence that encryption schemes were designed and tested by experienced specialists. “Encryption accidents can make data totally unusable, and even normal encryption can complicate availability,” Gartner says.

5. Recovery. Even if you don’t know where your data is, a cloud provider should tell you what will happen to your data and service in case of a disaster. “Any offering that does not replicate the data and application infrastructure across multiple sites is vulnerable to a total failure,” Gartner says. Ask your provider if it has “the ability to do a complete restoration, and how long it will take.”

6. Investigative support. Investigating inappropriate or illegal activity may be impossible in cloud computing, Gartner warns. “Cloud services are especially difficult to investigate, because logging and data for multiple customers may be co-located and may also be spread across an ever-changing set of hosts and data centers. If you cannot get a contractual commitment to support specific forms of investigation, along with evidence that the vendor has already successfully supported such activities, then your only safe assumption is that investigation and discovery requests will be impossible.”

7. Long-term viability. Ideally, your cloud computing provider will never go broke or get acquired and swallowed up by a larger company. But you must be sure your data will remain available even after such an event. “Ask potential providers how you would get your data back and if it would be in a format that you could import into a replacement application,” Gartner says.

Cloud Foundry components include a self-service application execution engine, an automation engine for application deployment and lifecycle management, and a scriptable command line interface (CLI), as well as integration with development tools to ease deployment processes. Cloud Foundry has an open architecture that includes a buildpack mechanism for adding frameworks, an application services interface, and a cloud provider interface.

Refer to the descriptions below for more information about Cloud Foundry components. Some descriptions include links to more detailed documentation.


Application Execution (DEA):

A Droplet Execution Agent (DEA) performs the following key functions:

  • Manage Warden containers: The DEA stages applications and runs applications in Wardencontainers.
  • Stage applications: When a new application or a new version of an application is pushed to Cloud Foundry, the Cloud Controller selects a DEA from the pool of available DEAs to stage the application. The DEA uses the appropriate buildpack to stage the application. The result of this process is a droplet.
  • Run droplets: A DEA manages the lifecycle of each application instance running in it, starting and stopping droplets upon request of the Cloud Controller. The DEA monitors the state of a started application instance, and periodically broadcasts application state messages over NATS for consumption by the HM9000.


Blob Store:

To create final releases, configure your release repository with a blobstore. BOSH uploads final releases to the blobstore, so that the release can later be retrieved from another computer.

To prevent the release repository from becoming bloated with large binary files (e.g. source tarballs), large files can be placed in the blobs directory, and then uploaded to the blobstore.


Service Brokers:

Architecture & Terminology

Services are integrated with Cloud Foundry by implementing a documented API for which the cloud controller is the client; we call this the Service Broker API. This should not be confused with the cloud controller API, often used to refer to the version of Cloud Foundry itself; when one refers to “Cloud Foundry v2” they are referring to the version of the cloud controller API. The services API is versioned independently of the cloud controller API.

Service Broker is the term we use to refer to a component of the service which implements the service broker API. This component was formerly referred to as a Service Gateway, however as traffic between applications and services does not flow through the broker we found the term gateway caused confusion. Although gateway still appears in old code, we use the term broker in conversation, in new code, and in documentation.

Message Bus:

This information was adapted from the NATS README. NATS is a lightweight publish-subscribe and distributed queueing messaging system written in Ruby.


Logging and Statistics:

Loggregator is the next generation system for aggregating and streaming logs and metrics from all of the user apps and system components in a Cloud Foundry deployment.

Using Loggregator

The main use cases are as follows:

  • App developers can tail their application logs or dump the recent logs from the CF CLI, or stream these to a third party log archive and analysis service.
  • Operators and administrators can access the Loggregator Firehose, the combined stream of logs from all apps, plus metrics data from CF components.
  • Operators can deploy ‘nozzles’ to the Firehose. A nozzle is a component that listens to the Firehose for specified events and metrics and streams this data to external services.
