Amazon AWS as Preferred Public Cloud Provider

While Salesforce it has now confirmed a deal under which it will expand upon that, making AWS its preferred public cloud infrastructure provider going into the future.

The deal is abiut $400 million over the next four years, this means 100 milion/year!
The contract filed by Salesforce with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. While the 10-Q statement referred only to a “third-party provider,” Fortune reported yesterday that “sources close to both companies” have confirmed that partner is AWS.

The expansion of services to the AWS cloud platform is part of Salesforce’s “planned international infrastructure expansion,” according to statements released yesterday by both companies, which did not mention the value of the deal. Amazon offers its AWS customers 33 “Availability Zones” across 12 geographic regions, with facilities in the U.S., Australia, Brazil, China, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Korea and Singapore.

Targeting New International Markets

This new deal means that for the first time Salesforce is expanding its use of AWS to such core offerings as its Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, App Cloud and more. The company has previously used AWS for such services as its Heroku app development platform and its SalesforceIQ customer relationship management software.

Salesforce also announced recently that it would use AWS to support one of its newest services: Salesforce IoT (Internet of Things) Cloud. Amazon, in turn, uses Salesforce’s offerings for its own customer management services, having signed an agreement to take those services company-wide in the first quarter of this year.

“[T]his is a huge expansion of our relationship with them and we plan to use more Amazon services in the future,” Salesforce vice chairman, president and COO Keith Block said of that agreement during last week’s Q1 2017 earnings call.

Although Salesforce plans to continue investing in the development of its own data centers to support its services, the company said it will turn to AWS to get services online more quickly and efficiently in select international markets. Salesforce said that it would provide more details about timing and specific locations later this year.

‘Meeting of the Minds’ on Cloud

The new agreement will enable Salesforce to “continue to scale, add new services and maintain their incredible momentum,” AWS CEO Andy Jassy said in a statement yesterday.

Salesforce reported a record number of large transactions in the first quarter of this year, as well as double-digit growth in revenue. Those results led the company to raise its 2017 expected year-end earnings by $80 million, to as much as $8.2 billion.

“[Amazon CEO] Jeff Bezos and I have a great meeting of the minds of the future of the cloud,” Salesforce chairman and CEO Marc Benioff said during last week’s earnings call. “I think that it’s been a great relationship and partnership for us. We want to continue to grow that and expand that strategically. We are definitely exploring ways that we can use AWS more aggressively with Salesforce.”

Cloud based infrastructure

Cloud based infrastructure, Cloud computing is an evolving computing paradigm that has influenced every other entity in the globalized industry, whether it is in the public sector or the private sector. Considering the growing importance of cloud, finding new ways to improve cloud services is an area of concern and research focus. The limitation of the available Virtual Machine Load balancing policies for cloud is that they do not save the state of the previous allocation of a virtual machine to a request from a User base and the algorithm requires execution each time a new request for Virtual Machine allocation is received from the User base. This problem can be resolved by developing an efficient virtual machine load balancing algorithm for the cloud and by doing a comparative analysis of the proposed algorithm with the existing algorithms.

The drivers for Cloud computing are many: the performance is higher, the infrastructure is scalable, the services are cheaper and the user can pay with the growth—all different from if the company should establish its own computing infrastructure. So the cloud has its potential. Amazon.com provides a cloud based infrastructure; Microsoft goes to the cloud; Sun Microsystems provides container based data storage and processing power—just to be installed in the cloud. In total, private and public data are available in the cloud as it is cheaper, it is faster, it can grow with the demand and it is always accessible. However, care have to be taken in order to ensure that the cloud based services are offered in a degree that matches needs and expected price models. The question is only how to deploy cloud computing to the masses, the SMEs.

There are different deployment models as described in, varying from purely private clouds, owned fully by the company, to public ones which are accessible to all interested parties via the internet. This reflects that there are trajectories in the deployment of the cloud that spans over: – National cloud deployed where the user must determine how to use public cloud to meet their goals—a realistic case for the SMEs. – Many organizational private clouds are deployed. Organizations must then determine how to federate or hybridize.

In between these two extreme trajectories, there are also community cloud (a cloud that is controlled and used by a group of organizations that have shared interests, such as specific security requirements or a common mission) and hybrid cloud (a combination of a public and a private cloud that interoperates—e.g. for outsourced non-business critical information and processes, while business critical services and data remains under control). It is expected that mainly larger companies will apply hybrid clouds.

The cloud provides an infrastructure, access technologies, services, etc. feasible to all end-users. Therefore, everything must be simple from an end-user perspective independent on the real complexity of what is underneath. However, when it comes to transparency for the location of own data, it becomes a major problem, as the end-user typically is unaware of where the data is stored. This means that the SMEs expect the data to be stored at a certain service provider, but the service provider might have outsourced the data to be stored elsewhere.

As already said, the cloud has a number of advantages both for the service provider and the SME. The SMEs just have to be convinced and understand what is appropriate behavior and philosophy. It is necessary to focus on how services on the internet, like Facebook, Twitter and others, always keep part of our social history. Therefore, it is worth questioning whether we are willing to open up for the same level of information when it comes to our professional life.

Once again, if the data are available on the internet, they can be traced. The on-going trend changing the infrastructure to a cloud based infrastructure, a trend that started recently as a result on the presence of a suitable platform for storage, sufficient computing power and an appropriate infrastructure in selected areas. This means that the roll-out of the cloud will continue with more and more services and companies providing cloud infrastructure and components hereto, like Microsoft, Cisco, HP and Amazon.

Last, but not least, it is necessary to take into account whether it is legal to use certain services and from where. Services like Pirate Bay are legal in some countries, but not in others—but are they illegal in the country from which they are accessed, or in which they are stored. This is an issue that must be raised due to ever on-going outsourcing of services.

This paper presents on-going research to develop the Intercloud Architecture Framework (ICAF) that addresses problems in multi-provider multi-domain heterogeneous cloud based infrastructure services and applications integration and interoperability, to allow their on-demand provisioning. The paper refers to existing standards in Cloud Computing, in particular, recently published NIST Cloud Computing Reference Architecture (CCRA).

The proposed ICAF defines four complementary components addressing Intercloud integration and interoperability: multi-layer Cloud Services Model that combines commonly adopted cloud service models, such as IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, in one multilayer model with corresponding interlayer interfaces; Intercloud Control and Management Plane that supports cloud based applications interaction; Intercloud Federation Framework, and Intercloud Operation Framework.

The paper briefly describes the architectural framework for cloud based infrastructure services provisioned on-demand that is used as a basis for building multilayer cloud services integration framework that allows optimized provisioning of both computing, storage and networking resources. The paper also provides suggestions for consistent inter-cloud security infrastructure. The proposed architecture is intended to provide an architectural model for developing Intercloud middleware and in this way will facilitate clouds interoperability and integration.

Cloud based applications operate as regular applications, in particular, using standard Internet protocols and platforms for services and applications interaction and management. However their composition and integration into distributed heterogeneous multi-provider cloud based infrastructure will require a number of functionalities and services that are jointly defined in this paper as Intercloud Architecture Framework.

This paper presents on-going research at the University of Amsterdam to develop the Intercloud Architecture that addresses problems with multi-domain heterogeneous cloud based applications integration and inter-provider and interplatform interoperability. The proposed high level architecture is based on the development and implementation of its different components in a few cooperating projects such as GEYSERS, GEANT, MANTICHORE and NOVI, which experience demonstrated needs for more general approach to complex multi-provider cloud based infrastructure services.

The proposed Intercloud Architecture Framework includes the four inter-related components that address different issues in heterogeneous multi-provider, multi-cloud, multi-platforms integration: multi-layer Cloud Services Model that combines commonly adopted cloud service models, such as IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, in one multilayer model with corresponding inter-layer interfaces;

Intercloud Control and Management Plane that supports cloud based applications and infrastructure services interaction;

Intercloud Federation Framework that defines infrastructure components for independent cloud domains federation;

and Intercloud Operation Framework that defines functional components and procedures to support cloud based services provisioning and operation.

The proposed approach and definitions are intended to provide a consolidation basis for numerous standardisation activities in the area of inter-cloud architectures by splitting concerns and using already existing and widely accepted solution where possible.

The analysis of the security issues in provisioning complex heterogeneous multi-provider intercloud infrastructures presented in the paper will also provide a good basis for the further intercloud security infrastructure definition and development.

Cloud security risks

Cloud security risks, Cloud computing is fraught with security risks, according to analyst firm Gartner. Smart customers will ask tough questions and consider getting a security assessment from a neutral third party before committing to a cloud vendor, Gartner says in a June report titled “Assessing the Security Risks of Cloud Computing.” Cloud computing has “unique attributes that require risk assessment in areas such as data integrity, recovery, and privacy, and an evaluation of legal issues in areas such as e-discovery, regulatory compliance, and auditing,” Gartner says. Amazon’s EC2 service and Google’s Google App Engine are examples of cloud computing, which Gartner defines as a type of computing in which “massively scalable IT-enabled capabilities are delivered ‘as a service’ to external customers using Internet technologies.” Customers must demand transparency, avoiding vendors that refuse to provide detailed information on security programs.

Ask questions related to the qualifications of policy makers, architects, coders and operators; risk-control processes and technical mechanisms; and the level of testing that’s been done to verify that service and control processes are functioning as intended, and that vendors can identify unanticipated vulnerabilities. Here are seven of the specific security issues Gartner says customers should raise with vendors before selecting a cloud vendor.

1. Privileged user access. Sensitive data processed outside the enterprise brings with it an inherent level of risk, because outsourced services bypass the “physical, logical and personnel controls” IT shops exert over in-house programs. Get as much information as you can about the people who manage your data. “Ask providers to supply specific information on the hiring and oversight of privileged administrators, and the controls over their access,” Gartner says.

2. Regulatory compliance. Customers are ultimately responsible for the security and integrity of their own data, even when it is held by a service provider. Traditional service providers are subjected to external audits and security certifications. Cloud computing providers who refuse to undergo this scrutiny are “signaling that customers can only use them for the most trivial functions,” according to Gartner.

3. Data location. When you use the cloud, you probably won’t know exactly where your data is hosted. In fact, you might not even know what country it will be stored in. Ask providers if they will commit to storing and processing data in specific jurisdictions, and whether they will make a contractual commitment to obey local privacy requirements on behalf of their customers, Gartner advises.

4. Data segregation. Data in the cloud is typically in a shared environment alongside data from other customers. Encryption is effective but isn’t a cure-all. “Find out what is done to segregate data at rest,” Gartner advises. The cloud provider should provide evidence that encryption schemes were designed and tested by experienced specialists. “Encryption accidents can make data totally unusable, and even normal encryption can complicate availability,” Gartner says.

5. Recovery. Even if you don’t know where your data is, a cloud provider should tell you what will happen to your data and service in case of a disaster. “Any offering that does not replicate the data and application infrastructure across multiple sites is vulnerable to a total failure,” Gartner says. Ask your provider if it has “the ability to do a complete restoration, and how long it will take.”

6. Investigative support. Investigating inappropriate or illegal activity may be impossible in cloud computing, Gartner warns. “Cloud services are especially difficult to investigate, because logging and data for multiple customers may be co-located and may also be spread across an ever-changing set of hosts and data centers. If you cannot get a contractual commitment to support specific forms of investigation, along with evidence that the vendor has already successfully supported such activities, then your only safe assumption is that investigation and discovery requests will be impossible.”

7. Long-term viability. Ideally, your cloud computing provider will never go broke or get acquired and swallowed up by a larger company. But you must be sure your data will remain available even after such an event. “Ask potential providers how you would get your data back and if it would be in a format that you could import into a replacement application,” Gartner says.

Cloud security framework

Cloud security framework, Cloud Computing is the fundamental change happening in the field of Information Technology. It is a representation of a movement towards the intensive, large scale specialization. On the other hand,it brings about not only convenience and efficiency problems, but also great challenges in the field of data security and privacy protection.

Currently, security has been regarded as one of the greatest problems in the development of Cloud Computing. This paper describes the great requirements in Cloud Computing, security key technology, standard and regulation etc.,and provides a Cloud Computing security framework. This paper argues that the changes in the above aspects will result in a technical revolution in the field of information security.

Cloud computing allows for both large and small organizations to have the opportunity to use Internet-based services so that they can reduce start-up costs, lower capital expenditures, use services on a pay-as-you-use basis, access applications only as needed, and quickly reduce or increase capacities. However, these benefits are accompanied by a myriad of security issues, and this valuable book tackles the most common security challenges that cloud computing faces.

The authors offer you years of unparalleled expertise and knowledge as they discuss the extremely challenging topics of data ownership, privacy protections, data mobility, quality of service and service levels, bandwidth costs, data protection, and support. As the most current and complete guide to helping you find your way through a maze of security minefields, this book is mandatory reading if you are involved in any aspect of cloud computing.

Cloud infrastructure

Cloud infrastructure it’s about the hardware and software components that make a cloud functional.
All the components like servers, storage, networking and virtualization software that are needed to support the computing requirements of a cloud computing model.
In addition, cloud infrastructures include a software abstraction layer that virtualizes resources and logically presents them to users through programmatic means.

In cloud computing, virtualized resources are hosted by a service provider or IT department and delivered to users over a network or the Internet. These resources include virtual machines and components such as servers, compute, memory, network switches, firewalls, load balancers and storage.

In a cloud computing architecture, which refers to the front end and back end of a cloud computing environment, cloud infrastructure consists of the back end components.

Cloud infrastructure is present in each of the three main cloud computing models infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS) and software as a service (SaaS). Together, these three models form what’s often called a cloud computing stack, with IaaS as the foundation, PaaS as the middle layer, and SaaS as the top layer.

Businesses use cloud infrastructures to run their applications. Unlike subscription-based pricing models, or payment structures that enable users to subscribe to vendor services for a set price, cloud infrastructures are typically purchased using a pay-per-use model. In a pay-per-usage model, users only pay for the services consumed generally on an hourly, weekly or monthly basis.

Rather than purchase cloud infrastructure from a provider, businesses can also build cloud infrastructures on-premises. When cloud providers maintain the cloud infrastructure, the environment is a public cloud. When the organization using cloud maintains the cloud infrastructure, the environment is a private cloud. And when both the cloud provider and user own pieces of the cloud infrastructure, the environment is a hybrid cloud.

Cloud Computing Definition

CLOUD COMPUTING DEFINITION

Cloud computing is defined as a blend of computing concepts that include a huge number of computers associated through a real time communication network (internet). In science, Cloud computing is an analogue for distributed computing over a network which is the ability to execute a program or application on several connected computers simultaneously. Cloud computing is a computing that depends on shared system resources instead of local servers or individual devices to implement applications. In Cloud computing, the Cloud pictogram is used as a symbol for the internet. Therefore, Cloud computing is a kind of internet based computing, where distinct services are delivered to an organization through the network. Cloud computing is analogous to Grid computing, a kind of computing where new processing cycles of an individual computer in the system are linked to resolve the problems of all stand-alone systems.

Cloud foundry

Cloud Foundry. Providing the best cloud services can be easy! There are a few companies that offer at very god price all the services or all most of it.
The one we like to discuss here is Cloud Foundry maybe the one of the first Top 5 cloud companies!

Cloud Foundry is an open source cloud computing platform as a service (PaaS) originally developed by VMware and now owned by Pivotal Software – a joint venture by EMC, VMware and General Electric. Cloud Foundry was designed and developed by a small team from Google led by Derek Collison and was originally called project B29.

cloud_foundry_logo (1)

They offer premium cloud products like:

Router:

The router routes traffic coming into Cloud Foundry to the appropriate component, whether it’s an operator addressing the Cloud Controller or an application user accessing an app running on a Diego Cell. The router is implemented in Go. Implementing a custom router in Go gives the router full control over every connection, which makes it easier to support WebSockets and other types of traffic (for example, via HTTP CONNECT). A single process contains all routing logic, removing unnecessary latency.

Refer to the following instructions for help getting started with the gorouter in a standalone environment.

Authentication

The UAA is the identity management service for Cloud Foundry. Its primary role is as an OAuth2 provider, issuing tokens for client applications to use when they act on behalf of Cloud Foundry users. In collaboration with the login server, it can authenticate users with their Cloud Foundry credentials, and can act as an SSO service using those credentials (or others). It has endpoints for managing user accounts and for registering OAuth2 clients, as well as various other management functions.

Cloud Controller:

The Cloud Controller provides REST API endpoints for clients to access the system. The Cloud Controller maintains a database with tables for orgs, spaces, services, user roles, and more.

The Cloud Controller collects these advertisements in a construct called a pool. When the Cloud Controller needs to find a DEA to run an app, it runs through the following steps, using criteria (minimum thresholds for disk, memory, etc.) specific to the app that the chosen DEA will run:

  1. It removes the expired DEA advertisements from the pool.
  2. It filters the remaining advertisements to include only those:
    • with adequate disk
    • with adequate memory
    • running the required stack (linux or windows)

HM900:

Cloud Foundry components include a self-service application execution engine, an automation engine for application deployment and lifecycle management, and a scriptable command line interface (CLI), as well as integration with development tools to ease deployment processes. Cloud Foundry has an open architecture that includes a buildpack mechanism for adding frameworks, an application services interface, and a cloud provider interface.

Refer to the descriptions below for more information about Cloud Foundry components. Some descriptions include links to more detailed documentation.

Application Execution (DEA):

A Droplet Execution Agent (DEA) performs the following key functions:

  • Manage Warden containers: The DEA stages applications and runs applications in Wardencontainers.
  • Stage applications: When a new application or a new version of an application is pushed to Cloud Foundry, the Cloud Controller selects a DEA from the pool of available DEAs to stage the application. The DEA uses the appropriate buildpack to stage the application. The result of this process is a droplet.
  • Run droplets: A DEA manages the lifecycle of each application instance running in it, starting and stopping droplets upon request of the Cloud Controller. The DEA monitors the state of a started application instance, and periodically broadcasts application state messages over NATS for consumption by the HM9000.

Blob Store:

To create final releases, configure your release repository with a blobstore. BOSH uploads final releases to the blobstore, so that the release can later be retrieved from another computer.

To prevent the release repository from becoming bloated with large binary files (e.g. source tarballs), large files can be placed in the blobs directory, and then uploaded to the blobstore.

Service Brokers:

Architecture & Terminology

Services are integrated with Cloud Foundry by implementing a documented API for which the cloud controller is the client; we call this the Service Broker API. This should not be confused with the cloud controller API, often used to refer to the version of Cloud Foundry itself; when one refers to “Cloud Foundry v2” they are referring to the version of the cloud controller API. The services API is versioned independently of the cloud controller API.

Service Broker is the term we use to refer to a component of the service which implements the service broker API. This component was formerly referred to as a Service Gateway, however as traffic between applications and services does not flow through the broker we found the term gateway caused confusion. Although gateway still appears in old code, we use the term broker in conversation, in new code, and in documentation.

Message Bus:

This information was adapted from the NATS README. NATS is a lightweight publish-subscribe and distributed queueing messaging system written in Ruby.

Logging and Statistics:

Loggregator is the next generation system for aggregating and streaming logs and metrics from all of the user apps and system components in a Cloud Foundry deployment.

Using Loggregator

The main use cases are as follows:

  • App developers can tail their application logs or dump the recent logs from the CF CLI, or stream these to a third party log archive and analysis service.
  • Operators and administrators can access the Loggregator Firehose, the combined stream of logs from all apps, plus metrics data from CF components.
  • Operators can deploy ‘nozzles’ to the Firehose. A nozzle is a component that listens to the Firehose for specified events and metrics and streams this data to external services.
